What is Depression?
Clinical depression is a serious and common illness that affects us
physically and mentally in our way of feeling and thinking. Depression can
make us want to withdraw from our family, friends, work, and school. It can
also cause us anxiety, loss of sleep, loss of appetite, and lack of interest or
pleasure in doing different activities.
What are the causes of depression?
There are several causes and factors for depression: Biological, genetic,
psychological, and environmental factors can be considered. Researchers
have established that major depression is a biological brain disorder, life
events such as the death of a loved one, loss or major change, chronic
stress, alcohol use, drugs, sexual abuse, and chronic illness.
Symptoms of depression
Depressed or apathetic state, decreased activity and lack of energy,
excessive sleepiness, feelings of guilt, irritability, suicidal thoughts,
changes in appetite, worthlessness, hopelessness, and a state of
emptiness.
How is depression treated?
80% to 90% of those who suffer from depression can be effectively treated
and recover their normal activities. The treatments are Psychotherapy and
Medication.
